John 3:16, explained
The single sentence that summarizes the entire gospel.
John 3:16 is Jesus' own summary of why he came. He's speaking at night to Nicodemus, a religious leader who is curious but cautious. In one sentence, Jesus explains the motive (love), the cost (his Son), the means (faith), and the result (eternal life).

'So' here doesn't mean 'so much' — it means 'in this way.' God's love is demonstrated, not just declared. The proof comes in the next phrase.
'the world' — the scope
Not just Israel. Not just the religious. The Greek word kosmos points to the whole human world, including the people who reject him. The offer is unrestricted.
'that he gave his one and only Son' — the cost
'Gave' anticipates the cross. The word for 'one and only' (monogenēs) means uniquely loved — there is no spare. God paid the highest price he could pay.
'that whoever believes in him' — the means
Belief here is not just intellectual agreement. It's trust — leaning your weight on him. 'Whoever' is the wide door: anyone qualifies.
'shall not perish but have eternal life' — the result
Eternal life starts now, not later. It's a kind of life (knowing God) more than a length of life. Perishing is the alternative — to be cut off from that life forever.
What John 3:16 asks of you
Not to admire it. To trust it. Today, you can simply say: 'Jesus, I believe you gave yourself for me. I want the life you offer.' That's the prayer the verse is inviting.
