What happens in the chapter

• Verses 1–15 — Nicodemus comes at night and calls Jesus a teacher sent from God. Jesus responds with the language of being born again / born from above, water and Spirit, and the bronze serpent from Numbers 21.
• Verses 16–21 — The best-known lines in the Gospel: love, giving, believing, eternal life, and the contrast between light and darkness.
• Verses 22–36 — John the Baptist is asked about Jesus' growing following and answers that he must become greater while John becomes less.

Words worth slowing down on

• Anōthen — "again" and "from above" at the same time. The misunderstanding drives the conversation.
• Pneuma — both "wind" and "Spirit", which is why verse 8 compares the Spirit to wind you hear but cannot trace.
• Believe (pisteuō) — in John this is usually a verb of trust and allegiance, not merely intellectual agreement.
• Eternal life — in John, a quality of life with God that begins now, not only a duration after death.

Questions to sit with

• Nicodemus is an expert who admits he does not understand. Where does that pattern show up in your own learning?
• What does it change to read verse 16 as part of a conversation rather than as a standalone slogan?
• Verses 19–21 talk about preferring darkness. What makes honesty feel risky?
