A beginner's guide that actually works — even if you've never prayed before, or you've fallen out of the habit.

Prayer is not performance. It is a conversation with the God who already loves you. You don't need the right words, the right posture, or a quiet enough room. You need permission to start, a simple structure when you get stuck, and a reason to come back tomorrow. This guide gives you all three.

What prayer actually is

Prayer is talking to God like he's listening — because he is. Jesus' own prayer life mixed gratitude, requests, honesty about hard feelings, and silence. You can do the same. Long prayers don't earn more from God; short, honest ones are heard.

The simplest place to start

  • Find a quiet spot — bed, couch, car, walk. Anywhere.
  • Say: 'God, I want to talk to you.'
  • Tell him what's true: today felt heavy, I'm grateful for X, I'm scared about Y.
  • Ask him for what you need — be specific.
  • Sit quietly for thirty seconds. End with 'Amen' (which just means 'so be it').

The ACTS method

  • A — Adoration. One sentence telling God who he is. 'You are good.' 'You are with me.'
  • C — Confession. One thing you want to bring honestly. 'I was harsh today.'
  • T — Thanksgiving. Name three things from today.
  • S — Supplication. Ask. For yourself, for someone else.

The PRAY method (great for journaling)

  • P — Praise. One line praising God.
  • R — Repent. Name one thing, ask for grace.
  • A — Ask. Specific requests.
  • Y — Yield. 'Your will, not mine.'

Use the Lord's Prayer as a scaffold

Matthew 6:9–13 isn't a script — it's a frame. Pray each line slowly and let it open up: 'Our Father' (God, you're my Father today). 'Hallowed be your name' (you are holy — bigger than my problem). 'Your kingdom come' (have your way in my home, my workplace). 'Give us today our daily bread' (I need X today). 'Forgive us … as we forgive' (I forgive ___). 'Lead us not into temptation' (keep me from X). 'Deliver us from evil' (protect ___).

What to say when you don't know what to say

  • Pray a Psalm. Psalm 23, 27, 42, 51, 91, or 139 work for almost any mood.
  • Pray a single sentence. 'Help me.' 'Thank you.' 'I trust you.' 'Be with me.'
  • Pray Scripture back. Read a verse, then turn it into a sentence: 'Cast your cares on him because he cares for you' → 'Lord, you care. I cast this on you.'

A 5-minute daily rhythm

  • Minute 1 — Stillness. Breathe. 'God, I'm here.'
  • Minute 2 — Scripture. Read one short verse from the daily devotional.
  • Minute 3 — Reflection. What does this say about God? About me?
  • Minute 4 — Prayer. Use ACTS or PRAY.
  • Minute 5 — Listen. Sit quiet. Write down anything that surfaces.

How to keep going (after you stop)

Everyone stops praying. Don't let shame become a wall. The next prayer is always one sentence away: 'God, I'm back.' Tie prayer to something you already do every day — coffee, commute, bedtime — so the habit has a home.

Common questions

  • Do I have to pray out loud? No. Silent prayers count.
  • Do I have to close my eyes? No. Pray with eyes open while you walk if that helps.
  • What if I don't believe yet? Pray that. 'God, if you're there, show me.' is a real prayer.
  • How long should I pray? As long or short as is honest. Five minutes daily beats one hour weekly.
