Bible reading plan for beginners

Before day one: three decisions

• Translation: pick a readable modern one (NIV, NLT, CSB, NRSV). If you re-read sentences to understand them, switch.
• Time and place: attach it to something you already do daily. Consistency comes from location and routine, not motivation.
• A notebook: one sentence a day about what you read. It doubles what you remember and gives you something to look back on.

Week 1 — Mark, the fast gospel

• Day 1 — Mark 1: John the Baptist, the baptism, the first disciples.
• Day 2 — Mark 2-3: conflict starts almost immediately.
• Day 3 — Mark 4: the parables, and why Jesus taught in stories.
• Day 4 — Mark 5: three encounters, three kinds of desperation.
• Day 5 — Mark 6: rejection at home, feeding the crowd.
• Day 6 — Mark 8: the hinge of the book — 'who do you say that I am?'
• Day 7 — Rest, or reread the chapter that struck you most.

Week 2 — the end of Mark, and where it all began

• Day 8 — Mark 9-10: what greatness means in this kingdom.
• Day 9 — Mark 11-12: Jerusalem, the temple, the greatest commandment.
• Day 10 — Mark 14: the last supper and the arrest.
• Day 11 — Mark 15-16: crucifixion and the empty tomb.
• Day 12 — Genesis 1-2: where the story begins.
• Day 13 — Genesis 3: what goes wrong, and why the rest follows.
• Day 14 — Rest, or write what surprised you in week two.

Week 3 — promise, law, and the prayer book

• Day 15 — Genesis 12: the call of Abraham and the promise.
• Day 16 — Exodus 3: the burning bush.
• Day 17 — Exodus 20: the Ten Commandments in their setting.
• Day 18 — Psalm 1 and Psalm 23: the Bible's prayer book.
• Day 19 — Psalm 51 and Psalm 139: honesty and being known.
• Day 20 — Proverbs 3: wisdom for ordinary decisions.
• Day 21 — Rest, or pray one of the psalms you read.

Week 4 — the story after the resurrection

• Day 22 — Isaiah 40: comfort for exiles.
• Day 23 — Luke 15: three parables about being lost and found.
• Day 24 — John 1: the same story from a different angle.
• Day 25 — John 3: Nicodemus, and the most quoted verse in the Bible.
• Day 26 — Acts 2: what happened after the resurrection.
• Day 27 — Romans 8: the deepest chapter of Paul's longest letter.
• Day 28 — 1 Corinthians 13: what love actually means here.
• Day 29 — Philippians 4: contentment, anxiety, and gratitude.
• Day 30 — James 1: faith that shows up in behaviour.

How to read each day in fifteen minutes

• Two minutes: read the chapter heading and ask what you expect.
• Ten minutes: read the passage once, without stopping at every question.
• Three minutes: write one sentence — something you noticed, and one question you would ask a group.

When you miss a day

Skip it. Read today's reading today. Catching up is what kills plans — three missed days become a backlog, the backlog becomes guilt, and guilt ends the habit. Missing days is expected; the plan is a route, not a debt.

What to do on day 31

• Read a whole book slowly — Luke, Genesis, or 1 Samuel are good next steps.
• Switch to a method rather than a plan: SOAP or inductive study on a shorter passage.
• Join a group. Reading with other people is the single biggest predictor of still reading in a year.
