How to lead a Bible study
A practical guide for first-time leaders: preparation in about an hour, a meeting plan that fits 75 minutes, and what to do when the room goes quiet.
Leading a Bible study is mostly hosting, not teaching. Your job is to prepare the passage well enough to keep the group honest to the text, to ask questions that open a conversation rather than close it, and to protect the time so everyone gets to speak. You do not need a degree, and the group does not need you to be the expert in the room.

Start a free groupOne hour of preparation, spread across the week
- Read the passage on two separate days. Distance produces observations that a single sitting will not.
- Write one sentence: 'This passage is about ______.' If you cannot, you are not ready to ask questions about it.
- Look up the surrounding chapter and the book's purpose. Ten minutes of context prevents most detours.
- Write eight questions and mark the two you will drop if time is short.
- Decide the one thing you hope people leave with. Say it once, at the end.
A 75-minute meeting plan
- 0-15 — arrival, drinks, and a real check-in question. This is not filler; it is why people come back.
- 15-20 — read the passage aloud, ideally twice, by two different voices.
- 20-35 — observation questions. What does it actually say? Who is speaking, to whom?
- 35-50 — interpretation questions. What did this mean to the first readers? Why does the writer put it this way?
- 50-60 — application questions. What would change if we took this seriously this week?
- 60-75 — prayer, requests, and the details for next time.
Questions that work, and questions that don't
- Open beats closed: 'What stands out to you here?' rather than 'Was Paul in prison?'
- Text-anchored beats abstract: 'What does verse 6 assume about the readers?' rather than 'What is faith?'
- One question at a time. Stacking three sounds thorough and produces silence.
- Avoid questions with an obvious 'correct' answer — nobody wants to guess what the leader is thinking.
- End with a question that costs something: what will you actually do before we meet again?
Handling the five awkward moments
- Silence: wait ten seconds. Then rephrase, or ask people to discuss in pairs first.
- The dominant talker: redirect by name, then have a warm private conversation and give them a job.
- The wrong answer: 'Where do you see that in the text?' lets the passage do the correcting.
- The tangent: 'Let's park that — I'll bring it back next week' and write it down where they can see you write it.
- The hard personal disclosure: stop the study, listen, pray, and follow up afterwards. Do not treat it as a discussion point, and refer on to professional help where it is needed.
Mistakes new leaders make
- Preparing a lecture instead of questions.
- Filling every silence.
- Running over time, every week.
- Asking application questions before anyone understands the passage.
- Trying to resolve every disagreement. Where Christian traditions genuinely differ, say so and let it stand.
Keeping the group alive after week six
- Commit to a fixed number of weeks, then renew deliberately. Open-ended groups drift.
- Rotate who reads and who prays; leadership shared is leadership sustained.
- Contact anyone who misses two sessions — a single message keeps people from quietly disappearing.
- Do something together that is not a study once a term.
