Bible study for beginners
No background required. Pick a translation, pick a starting point, learn four questions, and keep a rhythm short enough that you actually keep it.
1. Choose a translation you can read easily
- NLT — the easiest first read.
- NIV — balanced; used in most groups.
- CSB — clear and modern.
- ESV / NRSV — more literal; good once you are comfortable.
- Leave the KJV for later unless you already love the language.
2. Start in the right place
Begin with John or Mark, then Philippians, then a handful of Psalms. Genesis is worth reading, but not first. Revelation and Leviticus can wait a long time.
3. Learn four questions
- What does it say? (Read it twice, slowly.)
- What is going on around it? (Who is speaking, to whom, and why?)
- What did it mean to the first readers?
- What does it ask of me this week?
4. Keep a 20-minute routine
- 2 min — settle and pray one honest sentence.
- 6 min — read the passage twice.
- 7 min — write one observation, one question, one application.
- 3 min — look up one cross-reference if you have one.
- 2 min — pray the passage back.
5. Don't do it alone forever
Most people who quit did not lose interest; they lost momentum. Join a study group, find a study near you, or work through a 30-day reading plan with a friend.
