What does the Bible say about fear?
The most repeated command in Scripture — and the real strategy behind it.
People say 'do not fear' appears 365 times in the Bible — once for every day. The number is rough, but the pattern is real. Fear is the most addressed emotion in Scripture. The Bible doesn't dismiss it. It answers it.

David was afraid (Psalm 56:3). Elijah was afraid (1 Kings 19). The disciples were afraid in the boat (Mark 4). Scripture never shames you for feeling fear — it speaks into it.
2. 'Do not fear' is almost always paired with a reason
Look at the pattern: 'Do not fear, for I am with you' (Isaiah 41:10). 'Do not fear, for I have redeemed you' (Isaiah 43:1). The command is followed by who God is. Fear isn't pushed away by trying harder — it's displaced by truth.
3. There is a 'fear' the Bible commends
'The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom' (Proverbs 9:10). This is reverence — knowing God is God and you are not. This kind of fear actually shrinks every other fear.
4. Jesus addressed fear with presence, not lectures
On the water: 'It is I. Don't be afraid' (John 6:20). In the upper room: 'Peace I leave with you' (John 14:27). The first answer to fear is who is with you.
5. Perfect love drives out fear
1 John 4:18 — fear has to do with punishment. When you really know you are loved by God in Christ, fear loses its grip. Not all at once. But truly.
