What Does the Bible Say About Cremation?

Burial is the near-universal practice described throughout the Bible — Abraham buys a burial cave for Sarah (Genesis 23), and Jesus himself is buried in a tomb rather than cremated. This reflects the cultural norm of the ancient Near East more than an explicit command.

1 Samuel 31:11-13 describes the bodies of Saul and his sons being burned by the men of Jabesh Gilead, then the remains buried — one of the few cremation-adjacent references in Scripture, and it's presented as a response to a specific dishonorable circumstance (the bodies had been mutilated and displayed by the Philistines), not as ordinary practice.

Where people land on this today usually comes from theological reasoning rather than a direct verse:

• In favor of traditional burial: some point to the body being described as a "temple of the Holy Spirit" (1 Corinthians 6:19) and to the resurrection hope tied to Christ's own bodily burial and resurrection, arguing burial better reflects that symbolism.
