Bible Verses About Faith

Faith in Scripture is less about certainty and more about direction — trusting a God you cannot see with a situation you cannot control. These are the verses people search for most, grouped by what they actually address.

What faith is

Now faith is confidence in what we hope for and assurance about what we do not see.

Hebrews 11:1

The chapter that follows is a catalogue of people who acted on that confidence before they saw the outcome.

For we live by faith, not by sight.

2 Corinthians 5:7

Paul writes this while describing bodies that wear out — faith as the way you keep walking when the evidence is thin.

Consequently, faith comes from hearing the message, and the message is heard through the word about Christ.

Romans 10:17

Faith here is received rather than manufactured — it grows by exposure to Scripture.

For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith — and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God.

Ephesians 2:8–9

Faith is the channel, not the payment.

Faith in hard times

Trust in the LORD with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight.

Proverbs 3:5–6

The command is not to stop thinking, but to stop making your own understanding the final authority.

So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God.

Isaiah 41:10

Spoken to a people in exile — the promise is presence before it is rescue.

And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him.

Romans 8:28

Often quoted too quickly. Paul writes it in a chapter that also names groaning, weakness, and suffering.

God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble.

Psalm 46:1

'Ever-present' is the operative phrase — availability, not distance.

Though the fig tree does not bud... yet I will rejoice in the LORD.

Habakkuk 3:17–18

Faith stated at its hardest: after the harvest fails, not before.

Small faith, big results

If you have faith as small as a mustard seed, you can say to this mountain, 'Move from here to there,' and it will move.

Matthew 17:20

Jesus emphasizes the object of faith, not its volume. A little faith in a great God does more than great confidence in yourself.

If you believe, you will receive whatever you ask for in prayer.

Matthew 21:22

Read alongside 1 John 5:14 — asking 'according to his will' is the assumed frame.

Daughter, your faith has healed you. Go in peace and be freed from your suffering.

Mark 5:34

Said to a woman who had been ill twelve years and reached out anyway.

Faith and action

In the same way, faith by itself, if it is not accompanied by action, is dead.

James 2:17

James is not arguing against grace; he is arguing that living faith produces visible behavior.

Consider it pure joy... whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance.

James 1:2–4

Trials are framed as the process by which faith matures rather than proof that it failed.

The life I now live in the body, I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me.

Galatians 2:20

Faith described as a daily operating mode, not a one-time decision.

When you doubt

Immediately the boy's father exclaimed, 'I do believe; help me overcome my unbelief!'

Mark 9:24

One of the most honest sentences in Scripture — and Jesus responds to it without rebuke.

Stop doubting and believe.

John 20:27

Jesus says this to Thomas after inviting him to touch the wounds. The doubt is met with evidence, not shame.

The apostles said to the Lord, 'Increase our faith!'

Luke 17:5

Even the disciples treated faith as something they lacked and could ask for.

If we are faithless, he remains faithful, for he cannot disown himself.

2 Timothy 2:13

The anchor is God's consistency rather than yours.
