The 90-minute format

  • 0–15 min — Welcome, snacks, an icebreaker. People aren't ready to study until they've laughed.
  • 15–25 min — Recap last week + one prayer request per person (60 sec each).
  • 25–45 min — Read the passage aloud twice. Brief observations.
  • 45–75 min — Discussion (use the 12 questions below).
  • 75–90 min — Application, closing prayer, send-off.

The 8 best topics for a new group

  • Philippians — joy, contentment, and partnership (4 weeks).
  • James — faith that works (5 weeks).
  • The Sermon on the Mount (Matthew 5–7) — the heart of Jesus' teaching (6 weeks).
  • 1 John — identity and love (5 weeks).
  • Mark — fast-paced introduction to Jesus (8 weeks).
  • Psalms of lament (Ps 13, 22, 42, 73, 88, 130) — for hard seasons (6 weeks).
  • Galatians — grace vs. performance (6 weeks).

12 questions that work in any passage

  • What stood out to you?
  • What word or phrase keeps repeating?
  • Who is speaking and who is listening?
  • What did this mean to the first readers?
  • What does this teach about God?
  • What does this teach about people?
  • Is there a command to obey? A promise to claim? A warning to heed?
  • How does this fit with the rest of the chapter/book?
  • Where does this passage challenge you?
  • Where does it comfort you?
  • What's one specific thing you'll do differently this week?
  • How can we pray for you?

Mistakes that kill small groups

  • No structure — people stop coming because they don't know what to expect.
  • All teaching, no participation — it becomes a lecture.
  • All sharing, no Scripture — it becomes a venting session.
  • Inconsistent leadership — rotate, but don't abdicate.
  • Closed doors — invite one new person every 6 weeks.

Keep momentum between meetings

  • Send the passage + 1 short reflection on Tuesday.
  • Text one verse on Friday.
  • Pray for one person each day in your own prayer time.
  • End every cycle with a celebration meal — then start the next study.
