In addition to every Sunday, Catholics in the US are bound to attend Mass on six Holy Days of Obligation. The dates shift year to year and the obligation is sometimes dispensed when the day falls on a Saturday or Monday. Here is the complete 2026 calendar.

- Jan 1 (Thu) — Mary, the Holy Mother of God. Obligatory.
- May 14 (Thu) — Ascension of the Lord. In most US dioceses moved to Sunday May 17.
- Aug 15 (Sat) — Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary. Dispensed in 2026 (Saturday).
- Nov 1 (Sun) — All Saints. Falls on Sunday in 2026 — obligation is the Sunday Mass.
- Dec 8 (Tue) — Immaculate Conception of Mary. Always obligatory in the US.
- Dec 25 (Fri) — Nativity of the Lord (Christmas). Always obligatory.

What to do if you genuinely can't make it
Illness, work that cannot be moved, caring for someone, or distance excuses the obligation. If it was deliberate, the path forward is sacramental confession. Holy days are gifts, not burdens — they exist to mark the great mysteries of the faith.
