• Time — Saturday evening Mass, Sunday morning, or a Sunday evening service.
• Life stage — families with children, students, young professionals, retirees.
• Distance — a church you can reach in twenty minutes is a church you will keep attending.

Before you visit

• Check the current service time on the congregation's own page — August schedules in Madrid often change.
• Arrive ten minutes early; historic churches fill up at the main Sunday Mass.
• Ask whether there is a children's programme and at what point in the service children leave.
• If you are visiting in Spanish for the first time, Catholic Mass is the easiest to follow because the structure matches everywhere.
• Give any congregation three visits before deciding.
