Loneliness is described, not scolded
Psalm 25:16 ('Turn to me, and have mercy on me, for I am desolate and afflicted') and Psalm 88, which ends in darkness, are both in the prayer book of Scripture. There is no expectation that a faithful person never feels alone.
The two answers Scripture gives
- Presence: repeated promises that God does not leave (Deuteronomy 31:6; Matthew 28:20; Hebrews 13:5).
- People: the New Testament has no category for a solitary Christian. Its 'one another' commands — love, encourage, bear with, confess to, welcome — all assume a group you actually see.
