Who Was Samson in the Bible?
Samson was a judge of Israel known for supernatural physical strength — and for a life in which that strength repeatedly outran his judgment.

Samson's exploits against the Philistines are among the most physically dramatic in Scripture: tearing apart a lion barehanded, breaking free of ropes, and striking down a thousand men with a donkey's jawbone (Judges 15). The narrative repeatedly notes that "the Spirit of the Lord came powerfully upon him" — crediting God rather than Samson himself.
Judges 16 records his downfall. Philistine rulers pay Delilah to discover the source of his strength. After three false answers, Samson tells her the truth about his hair; it is cut while he sleeps, he is captured, blinded, and set to grinding grain in prison. His hair grows back, and in a final scene he pushes apart the pillars of a Philistine temple, dying along with those inside.
Why he's still discussed today
Samson is unusual among biblical heroes: enormously gifted and consistently reckless. Hebrews 11:32 still lists him among examples of faith, which is part of why his story gets read less as a moral model and more as an account of God working through a deeply flawed person.
