A few rules to know

  • Hebrew is read right to left. The first word of a sentence is on the right.
  • Five letters (Kaf, Mem, Nun, Pey, Tsadi) have a different shape at the end of a word ("final" form).
  • Vowels are not letters — they're dots and dashes added under or beside consonants. Modern Israeli Hebrew often omits them.
  • The dot inside a letter (dagesh) often changes its sound — ב = v, but בּ = b.
